Who Is This Course For?

Fear, doubt, and the pressure to conform are experienced by all. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a founder, a leader, an artist, a coach, a lifelong learner, a fan of John Malkovich, or simply someone at a crossroads, this course is for you: It will help you knock down creative and personal obstacles. John Malkovich will share the tools he has developed to overcome those barriers — and invite you to use them on your own journey.

I feel stuck and want to reconnect with direction and purpose

I’ve spent years excelling in my career or supporting others—but something is missing. As a lifelong learner, or someone seeking deeper meaning, I’m ready to push beyond my comfort zone and rediscover my true passion.

I’m creatively blocked and searching for flow

As an artist or innovator, I thrive on ideas—but lately, they won’t come. Whether I’m writing, directing, designing, or creating, I need to break through the barriers holding me back.

I admire John’s work and want to learn from him

Theater, film, and acting have shaped the way I see the world. Whether I’m a film buff or simply someone who loves great storytelling, I want to dive deeper into the creative mind behind the craft.

I’ve plateaued professionally and need a new challenge

I’ve worked hard to reach this level, whether as a founder, partner, or top manager, but lately, everything feels repetitive. The inner drive has faded, and I need a new challenge to break out of this stagnation.

I’ve lost touch with my instincts and want to lead boldly again

In my work as an entrepreneur, a creative, or an investor — I’ve always relied on intuition. But lately, self-doubt and fear of failure have taken over. I want to reclaim my confidence and take bold steps again.

I’m ready to stop meeting others’ expectations and follow my own voice

Too many outside voices are shaping my choices. Whether in business, the arts, or just on a personal level, I’ve been adapting to expectations instead of following my own vision. It’s time to reconnect with what truly drives me.

Course Curriculum

Session 1

Pain

How to embrace pain so you can transform struggle into creative power. You'll leave with a framework for turning adversity into self-expression.

John Malkovich's early life in Benton, Illinois was filled with both joy and hardship. He grew up in a free-spirited yet strict household, experiencing discipline, independence, and an early confrontation with loss when his beloved grandfather passed away. Adolescence brought its own struggles, including self-image issues and peer ridicule, leading him to take drastic measures to transform himself. Through these experiences, John learned that pain is an inevitable and formative part of life.

Session 2

Self-Expression

How to unlock self-expression so you can confidently share your unique voice. You'll leave with a method to access and refine your creative instincts.

John's journey to self-expression began when he abandoned a career in environmental studies to pursue acting. His time at Steppenwolf Theater was transformative, leading him to Broadway, Hollywood, and international acclaim. Yet his artistic pursuits extend beyond acting — to fashion, winemaking, and visual arts. To John, self-expression is the condition for personal and artistic fulfillment.

Session 3

Fear of Failure

How to navigate fear of failure so you can build resilience and take bold risks. You'll leave with a new perspective on failure as a tool for growth.

Despite a wildly successful career, John has faced failures in theater, business, and personal finance—including losing his life savings in the Bernie Madoff scandal. However, he sees failure as an unavoidable and necessary part of growth. He believes that embracing failure fosters humility and resilience, and that fear of failure is more damaging than failure itself.

Session 4

Acceptance

How to cultivate acceptance so you can move through life with clarity and confidence. You'll leave with a mindset shift that empowers fearless decision-making.

John embraces life as a rollercoaster—filled with highs and lows, successes and setbacks. Unlike many actors who play it safe, he takes risks, understanding that failure and loss are part of the human experience. He sees acceptance as the key to navigating life's uncertainties.

Meet Your Mentor

John Malkovich

is one of the greatest actors of our time — a man who, in the course of a 50-year career, has appeared in dozens of movies and played an unbelievable range of characters: from an 18th-century womanizing viscount, to an ex-CIA assassin, to a French couturier, to Harvey Weinstein.

He turns himself so convincingly into each character that many viewers assume John is those characters in real life. His eclectic range of screen and stage portrayals has lent him such an aura of mystery and unknowability that a cult movie in 1999 imagined what it was like Being John Malkovich. John is also a director of plays and movies, a producer, a fashion designer, a writer, a painter, a winemaker, a restaurant and nightclub owner, and so much else besides.

But in real life, he is, above all, a human being. He has lived through the gamut of experiences and emotions, joys and sorrows that all of us human beings live through from the moment of our birth. Those experiences and emotions, joys and sorrows have given him the depth, empathy, and rich inner life required to impersonate a multiplicity of characters with such prowess. They have also given him knowledge and wisdom about human existence and the human condition that he is eager to share with you as part of HelloGenius — and which will help set you on your own path to self-realization.

John Malkovich
"Fear of failure is much worse than failure itself. You can't give other people that kind of power. You have to retain that kind of power for yourself and yourself only. When you give up, or when you don't start, you give somebody else that power. That’s the reason you don’t start."
